Ernst honors ShinyTop Brewing

Senator visited business Thursday

A popular downtown bar and restaurant grew from a Fort Dodge man's hobby.

Nate McCubbin got interested in brewing beer more than a decade ago.

"He got really good at it really fast," said his brother, Fort Dodge City Councilman Todd McCubbin.

"He said we should open a brewery," Todd McCubbin added. "I said that's a great idea."

So 10 years ago, the McCubbin brothers opened ShinyTop Brewing at 520 Central Ave.

On Thursday, U.S. Sen. Joni Ernst, the chairwoman of the Senate Small Business Committee, came to Fort Dodge to present them her Small Business of the Week Award.

The Republican senator said she picks the award winners based on three criteria:

• Job creation

• Doing fun or different things

• Contributing to their community

Ernst thanked the McCubbins for being a "great part of the Fort Dodge fabric."

She presented the McCubbins with a copy of the statement she entered into the Senate record about ShinyTop brewing.

She had actually given the brewery the Small Business of the Week designation in July. Thursday was her first chance to visit the business.
