Energy-efficient building seminar scheduled for Thursday at Iowa Central

The Energy Group, Midwest Energy Efficiency Alliance and Iowa Central Community College will sponsor a half-day energy-efficient building seminar to be held Thursday in the carpentry shop at Iowa Central Community College, 1 Triton Circle. Registration is free, and pre-registration is requested.

Bill McAnally, retired ICCC carpentry instructor and energy-efficient building expert, and Dave Ruffcorn, Iowa State building code commissioner, Iowa State Fire Marshal’s Office, will lead the seminar.

Topics will include advantages of building homes in compliance with good energy efficiency techniques, compliance with the International Energy Conservation Code, and long-term benefits to consumers looking to buy or build a high-performance energy-efficient home.

The event is geared toward Iowa home builders/contractors, Realtors, bankers, building inspection staff, and interested home owners/home buyers.

Attendees will learn about important energy-related decisions to make when building or remodeling a home — including energy-efficient construction materials, technologies, building techniques, and mechanical choices (heating, cooling, ventilation and lighting).

“At this seminar, we’ll offer practical ideas on building efficiently — to save money, natural resources and energy. The Iowa version of the International Energy Conservation Code offers a practical list of energy-efficient building techniques designed to increase the comfort level of your home and make it last longer,” said Kelly Needles, president and CEO, The Energy Group.

“This seminar can help whether you are building, remodeling, financing or selling a home, or just trying to determine which updates may make your current home more energy efficient,” he said.

This seminar will be 8 a.m. to noon. Continental breakfast will be provided, and a boxed lunch is included.

Pre-registration is encouraged so meal plans can be made. After you register, you will receive specific info about seminar location and details about the ICCC campus.
