Lewis and Michelle Pergande, residents of Jewell, won an outstanding volunteer award in 2005 for their dedication to the Main Street program in Jewell. Among their volunteer work, the Pergandes worked nights and weekends at the local hardware store for 16 months to keep it open after the manager quit unexpectedly.
