NEWS: Fort Dodge Mayor William Patterson proclaimed Lauretta Nelson Day in honor of “Lutty” Nelson’s contributions to the community through volunteer work.

SPORTS: Drag car racer Tommy Johnson Jr. had reached 298.6 mph and was hoping to reach the 300 mark.

50 Years ago: Aug. 19, 1968

NEWS: Debbie Zinnel, of Pomeroy, was named Iowa Shorthorn Lassie Queen at the Iowa State Fair.

SPORTS: Dean Tuel, of Fort Dodge, won the state American Legion golf championship.
