FD Choral Society names scholarship winners

The Fort Dodge Choral Society has announced that three scholarships of $1,000 each have been awarded for the 2019-20 school year to vocal music students attending college and majoring in vocal music. This year’s scholarship recipients include:

Levi Capesius, from Algona, who is a junior music education and vocal performance major at Wartburg. Capesius has been a choral soloist and holds leadership positions in choir and other campus organizations; Evelyn Ames Schwartz Galstad, from Iowa City, who is a senior vocal performance and Nordic studies major at Luther whose credits include roles in on-campus operas and receiving the Luther’s Brudo Family Award in Opera; and Norah Wolfe, from Sidney, who is a senior vocal performance major at the University of Iowa. Wolfe has sung lead opera roles on campus as well as with the Cedar Rapids Opera Theatre, and has placed first in Iowa Center for the Arts Competition. Along with being successful music students, each of these young people is also an honor student and has part-time employment.

Applicants must be vocal music majors who have completed at least one year at an Iowa college or university or are area residents who study vocal music out-of-state. Scholarship recipients are selected on the basis of teacher recommendations, personal statements, musical abilities and music participation.

Over the past 15 years, Fort Dodge Choral Society has awarded 45 scholarships totaling $29,850. These scholarships are made possible through the financial support of friends and members. Contributions to the scholarship fund are always welcome, and specified donations are tax deductible. Contributions may be sent to: Fort Dodge Choral Society, c/o Alec Pendry, Treasurer, 824 N.
