FDSH earns 7 medals at state SkillsUSA

Fort Dodge Senior High students earned seven medals at the State Skills USA competition at DMACC in Ankeny on April 25-26.

Nineteen FDSH students competed in Team Works, Culinary, Technical Drafting, Automated Manufacturing, Restaurant Service, Auto Collision Repair, and Robotics Urban Search and Rescue.

The following students earned medals: Geoff Astor and Elijah Yates — Gold in Robotics Urban Search and Rescue.

Carter DeLanoit, Colten Munter and Gage Rile — Gold in Automates Manufacturing.

Maria Rosado — Gold in Restaurant Service.

Blaze Lo — Gold in Technical Drafting.

Hunter Alexander — Silver in Collision Repair; Kolby Chounthirath — Bronze in Technical Drafting; Jorge Blanco — Bronze in Culinary Arts.

Brayton Alexander, Boston Gordon, Emmanuel Hernandez and Tyson Preston — Bronze in Team Works.

Those earning gold medals also qualified for the National SkillsUSA competition, which will take place in Louisville, Kentucky, in late June.

In addition to the medals earned, two FDSH students, Geoff Astor and Matt Jass, were elected as state officers of the SkillsUSA student organization for the next school year. Astor will serve as the president for 2019-20.

“Competitions like this are an excellent opportunity for our students to showcase their skills and all they have learned,” said Ed Birkey, FDSH industrial technology instructor.
