Unger to provide care at SMCH

LAKE CITY– Stewart Memorial Community Hospital is pleased to welcome Dr. Rick Unger to its staff.

Unger is a board certified general surgeon and will provide general surgery services including laproscopic, gynecological, endoscopy, tissue and breast, colon cancer, gall bladder, and hernia repair, among other surgeries at the Lake City hospital.

Born near Chicago, Unger graduated from A.T. Still University in Kirksville, Missouri. He completed his general surgery residency in St. Louis at Deaconess Hospital, which is now part of the St. Luke Hospital system.

Unger will provide coverage for Dr. Ronald Cheney at the Lake City hospital as needed while Dr. Cheney is on leave. He worked closely with Cheney at Mid Iowa Surgery.

Unger has practiced medicine in Iowa and now travels all over the United States to provide surgical coverage in rural, critical access hospitals. He enjoys the work and said, “I get the chance to meet new people, see different parts of the country, and learn new ways of doing things.”

“As Stewart Memorial continues to support the mission work of Dr. Cheney, we are excited to continue to provide high quality of surgical care through coverage by Dr. Rick Unger,” said Cindy Carstens, CEO at SMCH. “Dr. Unger’s practice style is very similar to Dr. Cheney as they both worked together at Mid Iowa Surgery. We are committed to providing the same coordinated care that our patients now experience with Dr. Unger during Dr. Cheney’s leave.”
