Come for fun on a ‘Polecat Hayride’

MANSON -- Those in the audience for Manson Northwest Webster's fall play, "Polecat Hayride," should come prepared to laugh and have a good time.

Kim Keller, fall play director, described "Polecat Hayride," by Tim Kelly, as a hillbilly comedy about two families who have been feuding for more than 100 years.

"The feud attracts the attention of a couple of reporters who are desperate to make a book deal and help two youngsters find love," she said. "Meanwhile, the locals just want the annual hayride and a bit of romance."

The MNW play is set for 7 p.m. Nov. 13 and Nov. 14 in the high school auditorium.

After losing several seniors to graduation, Keller said she chose this comedic play to peak students' interest in acting.

"It's easy to generate interest in something that's easy and fun," she said. "When you just want something fun for kids that will help them get excited about doing a show, a hillbilly show is kind of the way to go."

The challenge this year is getting everyone together. Of the more than 40 students in the cast, all but two are involved in a fall sport.

"We do before school, after school. Sometimes it's just a half hour before a volleyball game," Keller said.

This year's leads are Bella Fitzgerald playing Sally and Elliott Droste as Joe.

"They are a couple of seniors who are anchoring the show," Keller said.

Their characters are the two reporters "desperately trying to make a book deal."

If there is a message in the play, Keller said, it's that "true love conquers all."

Why should people come?

"In a world where everything feels really serious, this will be a good break," said Keller. "It will be lots of laughs and lots of fun."

Tickets are $5 for students and $10 for adults. They are available for purchase on Bound. Keller said tickets will also be available at the door as long as patrons have the exact amount of cash on hand.
