King Band concert tours the world — musically
The summer concerts by the Karl L. King Municipal Band will continue for three more Sunday evenings on July 12, 19 and 26.
Concert time is 7:30 p.m. at the historic Karl L. King Band Shell in Oleson Park. There is no admission charge courtesy of the City of Fort Dodge. The Southeast Valley School Fine Arts Boosters will again provide ice cream and baked goodies before the concert for a freewill donation to their school programs.
Dan Cassady is in his second season as the band’s conductor, and Paul Bloomquist serves as the band’s announcer. Those attending these concerts are reminded to bring their own lawn chairs or blankets, since no public seating is provided.
This July 12 concert has taken on a definite around-the-world flavor. Starting with 20-year old Karl King’s 1911 march, “Wanderlust,” the concert will continue with “Cakewalk” from the “Suite of Old American Dances,” before heading to Paris for “The Skaters’ Waltz,” followed by the Spanish Paso Doble “El Caballero” used to accompany Liberty horses in the circus, and then a beautiful song inspired by rural life down under, “Australian Up-Country Tune.”
Featured soloist on trumpet will be Tim Miller from Humboldt. Miller has played the solo chair in the band’s trumpet section for many years. He is retired after a long and successful career at both Humboldt High School (seven years) and Humboldt Junior High School (24 years). He previously taught fifth through 12th grade band for nine years at Sheffield-Chapin Schools. Miller continues to perform locally with Jive for Five Brass Quintet, Humboldt Big Band, 515 Big Band, Lone Tree Revival, and Northfield Church of Christ’s worship team.
Miller will perform the classic technical solo, “The Carnival of Venice,” and then change the pace with a Big Band ballad from the 1930s with “Sleepy Lagoon,” recorded by Harry James and several other artists.
Since July 12th is the birthday of Oscar Hammerstein II, Cassady has chosen to perform highlights from “The Sound of Music,” set primarily in Austria. The song-writing team of Richard Rodgers and Hammerstein developed musicals that revolutionized the Broadway stage during the 1940s, 1950s, and into the 1960s.
Rounding out the band’s worldwide tour will be a return back home to hear former conductor Reginald R. Schive’s tribute to the local newspaper, “The Fort Dodge Messenger March,” which includes part of the Fort Dodge Senior High School Song. Closing the concert will be Karl King’s exciting and spirited 1913 circus march, “The Mystic Call.” As always, each concert closes with the playing of our National Anthem, “The Star-Spangled Banner.”
In case of inclement weather, the concert may be delayed or even canceled at the starting time. Any announcements will be made on the band’s Facebook page for the Karl L. King Municipal Band at https://www.facebook.com/karlkingband/.
