The final concert of this 2026 summer season by the Karl L. King Municipal Band of Fort Dodge will be held this Sunday evening at the historic Karl L. King Band Shell in Oleson Park. Concert time is 7:30 p.m. Before the main concert starts, however, the popular area Brass Quintet, Jive for Five, will do a short pre-concert performance, starting at 7 p.m.
An ice cream social provided by the Southeast Valley School Fine Arts Boosters will also precede the concert. People are reminded to bring their own lawn chairs or a blanket, since there is no public seating provided. Admission is free, courtesy of the City of Fort Dodge. Conductor of the Band is Dan Cassady and Paul Bloomquist is the announcer.
Selections by Karl King are always featured, and will include his most famous and often-recorded 1913 march, "Barnum and Bailey's Favorite," along with one of King's fast-paced circus galops, "Royal Hippodrome." John Philip Sousa's famous march, "The Invincible Eagle," is also on the program.
This week's classical selections include Russian composer Modest Moussorgsky's "Coronation Scene" from his opera "Boris Godunov," composed between 1868 and 1873, along with Austrian composer Franz von Suppe's overture to his operetta, "Pique Dame (The Queen of Spades)," composed in 1864.
Lighter sounds will be heard with a popular song from the 1950s, "Autumn Leaves," as a prelude to the upcoming fall season, along with musical highlights from "The King and I," one of Rodgers and Hammerstein's great Broadway musicals which premiered on Broadway in 1951.
Members of Jive for Five Brass Quintet include Tim Miller from Humboldt on trumpet, David Swaroff from Belmond on trumpet, Kathy Yoakam from Humboldt on French horn, Dan Cassady from Twin Lakes on trombone, and Paul Bloomquist from Dayton on tuba. These musicians are all members of the Band, and will perform "Just a Closer Walk with Thee" and the Michael Golemo arrangement of "Jive for Five" during the concert. The band will be guest-conducted on those two selections by Emily Willadsen, high school band director at Humboldt.
This final summer concert always closes in the traditional circus way, with the playing of Karl King's 1944 march, "Auld Lang Syne," followed by our national anthem, "The Star-Spangled Banner."
In case of inclement weather, this concert may be cancelled or delayed at the starting time. Any announcements will be made on the band's Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/karlkingband/.
