King Band concert highlights Father’s Day
The summer concerts by the Karl L. King Municipal Band continue on Sunday evening, starting at 7:30 p.m. There is no admission charge, courtesy of the City of Fort Dodge. These concerts are held at the Karl L. King Bandshell in Oleson Park. Dan Cassady returns to the podium this week as conductor, and Paul Bloomquist returns as announcer.
An ice cream social by the Southeast Valley School Fine Arts Boosters precedes each concert. Ice cream and brownies will be available for a freewill donation, starting around 6:30 p.m. People attending these concerts are reminded to bring their own lawn chairs, since no public seating is provided.
A wide variety of music is planned to appeal to all musical tastes during this special Father’s Day presentation. If Dad is a fan of those fast-paced marches, then there will be several on this program. The concert will open with Henry Fillmore’s classic march, “The Klaxon,” dedicated to the producers of the Klaxon Automobile Horns. The music of the band’s namesake, Karl L. King, is also very popular and two of King’s nearly 200 march compositions are included, “Yellowstone Trail” and “The Iowa Band Law.” Closing the concert will be John Philip Sousa’s “Nobles of the Mystic Shrine,” written for the Almas Temple Shrine Band of Washington D.C.
If Dad likes the music of America’s greatest art form, then a special feature of this concert will be the performance by the Dixieland Combo and band on the “Original Dixieland Concerto.” Combo members include Nikole Nuttall on clarinet, Cindy Johnson on tenor sax, Tim Miller on trumpet, Paul Bloomquist on trombone, Monte Leichsenring on tuba, and Jeremy Smith on percussion.
Maybe Dad likes music that is a bit more serious in style. The evening’s classical offerings will include a chorale prelude titled “Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring,” composed by Johann Schop and Johann Sebastin Bach, along with Charles Gounod’s, “Festive Dance” from his opera, “Faust.”
Of course, Dad probably just wants to have fun and relax on his special day. What better way to celebrate than a night on Broadway? A lighter selection on this program includes “Broadway Show-stoppers Overture,” a medley of six well-known and popular songs from the stage.
A tribute to our great country will be America’s national hymn, “God of Our Fathers,” performed in a new, contemporary setting by Claude T. Smith. A musical tribute to John Philip Sousa, titled “A Sousa Portrait,” narrated by Paul Bloomquist, will highlight the life and music of America’s great composer.
Each concert always closes with a salute to our great country with the playing of our National Anthem, “The Star-Spangled Banner,” bringing Dad’s special day to a fitting close.
In case of inclement weather at the starting time, the concert may be delayed or canceled. Any announcement will be made on the band’s Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/karlkingband/.
