King Band to salute Flag Day and Father’s Day Sunday
The Karl L. King Municipal Band of Fort Dodge, conducted by Dan Cassady, will continue its 2025 summer concert season on Sunday evening at the Karl L. King Band Shell in Oleson Park. Concert time is 7:30 p.m.
There is no admission charge, courtesy of the City of Fort Dodge. Persons attending these concerts are reminded to bring their own lawn chairs or blankets, since no public seating is provided. Audience members are invited to bring small American flags to wave at appropriate times during the evening.
This Sunday’s concert will feature a variety of selections to celebrate both the Flag Day holiday and also selections in honor of Father’s Day. Marches opening the evening program include Karl King’s “Vanguard of Democracy” and “Salute to the Colors” by Karl L. King and Bert Anthony. Celebrating the dads in attendance will be E.E. Bagley’s march “The Father of His Country” written in 1932 to commemorate the Bi-Centennial year of George Washington’s birth.
To celebrate America, the band will perform Andrew Glover’s exciting arrangement, “Those in Peril on the Sea,” based on the Navy Hymn, and Samuel A. Ward’s moving hymn, “America, the Beautiful.” This American standard debuted in 1910, combining the words of a poem by Katherine Lee Bates with the hymn tune written earlier by Ward.
Featured vocalist Roger Netz from Manson will perform one of America’s favorites, Lee Greenwood’s “God Bless the U.S.A.” The band will also perform American composer Leroy Anderson’s “The Phantom Regiment.” along with a collection of popular songs commemorating the anniversary of D-Day titled “Homefront: Musical Memories of World War II,” including ‘Thanks For The Memories,” “Don’t Sit Under The Apple Tree,” “I’ll Be Seeing You,” and several more which audience members are certain to recognize and remember.
Birthdays of two well-known composers will be celebrated during this concert as well. The trombone section will be featured performing David Rose’s delightful “Holiday for Trombones,” which will be conducted by Tim Miller, retired band director from Humboldt and a long-time member in the band’s trumpet section. On the classical side will be two movements from Norwegian composer and pianist Edvard Grieg’s “Peer Gynt Suite,” including “Anitra’s Dance” and “In The Hall of the Mountain King.”
Closing the concert will be an exciting galop by Russell Alexander titled “The Storming of El Caney,” followed by America’s national march, “The Stars and Stripes Forever” by John Philip Sousa, always an audience favorite. Each week, these concerts close with our national anthem, “The Star-Spangled Banner.”
In case of inclement weather, this concert may be cancelled at the starting time. Any announcements will be made on the band’s Facebook page for the Karl L. King Municipal Band at https://www.facebook.com/karlkingband/.
