Dayton Rodeo rides again

87th annual Labor Day rodeo to feature nationally known talent

DAYTON — The 87th annual Dayton Rodeo will ride again Aug. 30-Sept. 2. For more than eight decades the Dayton Rodeo has attracted large audiences from across Iowa to take in bull riding, barrel racing, youth mutton busting, and even community members participating in the wild horse race.

Fan favorite Cowboy Kenny will return to the arena along with 10-time PRCA Clown of the Year Justin Rumford.

Grand Marshal

Bruce Lambert, a longtime supporter of the Dayton Rodeo, has been named the 2024 Grand Marshal. Lambert began parking cars at the rodeo alongside his father and twin brother when he was just 12 years old.

In 1988, Lambert was nominated to the Dayton Rodeo Celebration Committee which he served on for the next 21 years helping with the parade and carnival set-ups, to park cars, helping vendors to set up, dust control for the roads, helping with ticket sales, and even working the Community Club food stand.

Dayton Rodeo Senior Queen

Kalie Buenting, a recent graduate of Southeast Valley High School, and daughter of Amanda Buenting and the late Jamie Buenting, has been named the Dayton Rodeo Senior Queen. Buenting has been involved in the rodeo as well as riding since the age of 10 when she fell in love with barrel racing. Buenting credited her horse, Broker, a 25 year old quarter horse gelding, with her ability to realize her dream in the arena. Buenting is a student of Iowa Central Community College majoring in Animal Science with plans to transfer to Iowa State University in Ames to become an equine veterinarian.

Dayton Rodeo Junior Queen

Kyla Egli, a junior at Manson Northwest Webster High School, has been named the Dayton Rodeo Junior Queen. Egli has owned horses her entire life and enjoys participating in rodeo, volleyball, wrestling, track, 4-H, FFA, student council, National Honor Society, and the Talented and Gifted program. Egli credited her horse Cisco, a five year old Palomino gelding with being her “trusty steed” in the arena.

Flag Carriers

The 2024 Dayton Wrangler American Flag carrier will be 16-year-old Ashlyn Lovig from Boone. Lovig is currently a junior at Boone High School and participates in the Boone A&M FFA chapter and has spent the past two years on the Dayton Wranglers Pro Rough Riders team.

The 2024 Iowa flag carrier is Shaden Hefley. Hefley is a 14-year-old freshman at Southeast Valley High School. Hefley participates in FFA, 4-H, volleyball, student council, and rodeo.

Dayton Wrangler Rough Riders Pro Drill Team

The 2024 Dayton Wrangler Rough Riders Pro Drill Team is comprised of Karregan Davis, Alexis Essing, Shelby Sorenson, Caitlyn Klingson, Harley Eckert, Rylie Holder, Morgan Lenning, Cassidy Fournier, Kailey Konvalinka, and Katara Jondle. The team is an equestrian drill team comprised of local riders and their horses. The team showcases their riding skills, intricate formations, and synchronized movements in the rodeo arena.

Cowboy Kenny

Cowboy Kenny returns to the Dayton Rodeo as the 2024 specialty act. Kenny Bartram, also known as “Cowboy Kenny” will bring his freestyle high-flying stunts to the arena. Bartram began his career as a professional motocross racer having competed in the AMA Motocross Championship and the X Games. He’s won multiple awards including two gold medals at the X Games and a World Freestyle Championship. Bartram is also known for his work as a stunt performer and coordinator, working on projects like “The Dukes of Hazzard,” “Transformers,” and “The Walking Dead.”

Rodeo Clown

Ten-time PRCA Clown of the Year Justin Rumford will entertain Dayton Rodeo fans on the hillside this year. Rumford’s comedy and storytelling come from his long standing involvement in rodeo, from bullfighting to bronc riding, to pickup man to bulldogging.
