Stroke and vascular screenings Monday at TRMC

UnityPoint Health — Trinity Regional Medical Center is holding stroke and vascular screenings Monday. To make an appointment call, Trinity Healthy Living at 515-574-6350.

The stroke screen is for people who may be at risk for a stroke. Risk factors include family history of strokes, high blood pressure, cigarette smoking, heart disease, obesity, high cholesterol, heavy use of alcohol and lack of physical activity.

The $35 screen includes risk factor questionnaire, blood pressure and pulse check, non-fasting cholesterol determination, heart rhythm with 3-lead EKG for heart irregularity and ultrasound of the carotid arteries.

The abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) screen is for individuals at risk for the development of an AAA. The greatest risk factor is a family history of AAA. Other factors include age (40 and older), male gender, tobacco use, high blood pressure and peripheral vascular disease. Cost is $35.

The peripheral vascular disease (PVD) screen is for individuals at risk for the development of PVD. Candidates are individuals with diabetes, cardiovascular disease, smokers, those who experience difficulty walking or leg pain. Cost is $35.

The osteoporosis screen is also available at the heart and stroke check for individuals interested in learning if they are at risk of developing osteoporosis. Cost is $25.

The cost for all four screens is $115. No Medicare, Medicaid or private insurance accepted.

Vascular surgeon, Dr. Michael Willerth, with UnityPoint Clinic – Surgery, reviews all vascular screening results and recommends follow-up care, if needed. Screening results are sent directly to the participant.
