Broadway comes to Iowa Central

Iowa Central Community College’s Vocal Music Department will be launching its season next weekend with a free outdoor concert featuring all of the college’s vocal ensembles.

“Broadway and Beyond” will begin at 7 p.m. on Sept. 29 on the college’s Student Resource Center north lawn.

The concert will be a collection of favorite Broadway tunes from musicals like “Rent,” “Aida” and “The Phantom of the Opera.”

“We pick the songs that would showcase our students the best,” said ICCC Director of Vocal Music Will Lopes.

This concert will have something for everyone to enjoy, he said.

It will feature the Triton Singers concert choir, Vocal Jazz, Encore Singers and PopVoices ensembles, as well as several soloists from the groups. There are 60 students in the vocal music department this year, Lopes said.

Guests are encouraged to bring chairs and blankets because there is no permanent seating on the lawn.

For those who are unable to attend the show in person, the concert will be live-streamed on the college’s Facebook page, Lopes said.

“This is an outdoor concert and it’s always fun to be outside, especially knowing that it’s going to get cold at some point soon,” he said. “We also encourage people to come because they might year some of their favorite songs. This is a very uplifting concert.”

The last Broadway and Beyond concert was held at the Oleson Park Bandshell in 2020.

“We just feel that this will be a great way on a Friday night for people to get out of the house and bring their family, bring their favorite snacks and then just sit down, relax and enjoy the show with some of our students,” Lopes said.

Lopes also noted that the concert is opening the season in a “neutral” place because this is expected to be the last performance of the department before the newly-renovated Decker Auditorium and Center for the Performing Arts opens on campus this winter.
