King Band summer concert Sunday

The final concert of this 2023 summer season by the Karl L. King Municipal Band of Fort Dodge will be held Sunday back in the Karl L. King Band Shell in beautiful Oleson Park after a one-week absence. Admission is free, courtesy of the City of Fort Dodge. Conductor of the band is Jerrold P. Jimmerson, with Dan Cassady as the assistant conductor and Paul Bloomquist as the announcer.

Persons are reminded to bring their own lawn chairs or blankets, since there is no seating provided. The Good Shepherd Lutheran Church from Fort Dodge will again be selling homemade ice cream and cake before and during the concert, starting around 6:30 p.m.

Starting at 7 p.m., the popular area brass quintet, Jive for Five, will be featured on several selections before the main concert starts. Members of this group include Tim Miller from Humboldt on trumpet, David Swaroff from Belmond on trumpet, Kathy Yoakam from Humboldt on French horn, Dan Cassady from Twin Lakes on trombone, and Paul Bloomquist from Dayton on tuba.

The Karl L. King Municipal Band Concert starts at 7:30 p.m. and will feature a variety of marches, along with classical and popular selections during their hour-long concert. This “Grand Finale” will open with Karl King’s most famous and often recorded march, “Barnum and Bailey’s Favorite,” followed by Johan Halvorsen’s “Entry March of the Boyares,” one of the finest European marches to be found in the repertoire of many orchestras and bands.

Sunday’s classical selection will be from the Italian composer Gioachino Rossini titled, “The Italian in Algiers.” This well-known overture premiered in Venice in May, 1813. “The music is characteristic of Rossini’s style, remarkable for its fusion of sustained, manic energy with elegant, pristine melodies”.

On the lighter side will be a medley of songs from several popular movies of yesteryear titled “Hooray for Hollywood.” “Listen and see how many you recognize and remember,” says Jimmerson. Meredith Willson’s “Seventy Six Trombones” from the popular Broadway musical “The Music Man” is also on the program. This arrangement was crafted by the noted American composer Leroy Anderson originally for the Boston Pops Orchestra.

The popular area brass quintet, Jive for Five, will join the band for two selections. First will be “Jive for Five” by Paul Nagle, as arranged by Mike Golemo from Iowa State University, followed by a medley of three well-known jazz standards, “Dixieland On Stage.”

The percussion section will be featured with the band on “Field Ayres,” a collection of three traditional rudimental snare drum solos. Featured performers include Jeremy Smith from Fort Dodge, Luke Snyder from Eagle Grove, and Rollie Jenson from Humboldt.

This final summer concert closes with one of Karl King’s famous circus galops, “Homestretch,” followed in the traditional circus way with the playing of King’s march, “Auld Lang Syne,” and then closing with our national anthem, “The Star-Spangled Banner.”

In case of inclement weather, the concert may be canceled at the starting time. Any announcements will be made on the band’s Facebook page listing for the Karl L. King Municipal Band at https://www.facebook.com/karlkingband/ or on the band’s website at www.karlking.us.

Starting at $4.62/week.
