King Band concert in new location Sunday
The Karl L. King Municipal Band will continue to make Sunday evening special in Fort Dodge with their weekly band concerts, starting at 7:30 p.m. Because of the Shellbration event on Saturday being held at the Band Shell, the Sunday evening band concert was asked to relocate to another site.
That concert will now be held at the Karl L. King Memorial Park, located in downtown Fort Dodge in front of the Fort Dodge Public Library. This area was formerly known as the City Square. There is still no admission charge, with these concerts being provided by the City of Fort Dodge. An ice cream social will still be held before this concert, starting around 6:30 p.m., sponsored by the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church.
Conductor of the King Band is Jerrold P. Jimmerson, currently in his 21st season, with Dan Cassady serving as the assistant conductor and Paul Bloomquist handling the announcing duties.
This concert will highlight several different styles of band music. A classical band work on the evening’s concert includes “Armida Overture” by the Austrian composer, Franz Joseph Haydn, one of the most prolific and prominent composers of the classical period in music. This opera, which debuted in 1784, was considered by Haydn himself to be the most famous of his many operas.
Well known popular selections will also be heard, and include highlights from the successful Broadway musical, “The Phantom of the Opera,” along with the music from a very popular group in the 1960’s with “The Sounds of the Tijuana Brass.”
Karl L. King’s music is always a popular treat, and there will be some on this concert to enjoy, including “The Goldman Band March” and the “Royal Hippodrome Galop.” Other marches on the evening program include the concert opener, “Amparito Roca,” an exciting Mexican march by Jaime Texidor; Fred Jewell’s circus march, “Gentry’s Triumphal” and the evening’s closing selection, “The Last Word,” by G.H. Huffine.
Two special features await the listener during this concert. First will be Shari Netz, a vocalist from Manson, who will sing the popular classic, “Blue Moon,” followed by Natalie Cole’s up-tempo recording of “Orange-Colored Sky.” Also the members of the trombone section will be playing Al Sweet’s “Sweet Trombone Rag.” Sweet was an American composer and conductor. From 1906-1911, he was leader of the band for the Ringling Brothers Circus.
A special tribute during this concert will be made to Tom Tierney, who recently passed away, with the playing of Karl King’s dirge, “Remembrance.” Mr. Tierney could be seen at many of the band concerts through the years taking beautiful pictures of each event which were then posted on his own personal Facebook pages, along with the King Band’s Facebook page listing at https://www.facebook.com/karlkingband/.
Closing the concert will be “The Star-Spangled Banner.” These band concerts will continue for one more Sunday evening on July 23, when the Karl King band will return to the Band Shell in Oleson Park once again for their season finale concert.
