King Band concert is Sunday

The band concerts continue during this 2023 summer season by the Karl L. King Municipal Band of Fort Dodge at 7:30 p.m. Sunday at the Karl L. King Band Shell in Oleson Park. Admission is free, courtesy of the City of Fort Dodge. Conductor of the band is Jerrold P. Jimmerson, with Dan Cassady as the assistant conductor and Paul Bloomquist the announcer.

Persons are reminded to bring their own lawn chairs or blankets, since there is no seating provided. The Good Shepherd Lutheran Church from Fort Dodge will again be selling homemade ice cream and cake before and during the concert, starting around 6:30 p.m.

The Karl L. King Municipal Band will feature a variety of marches, classical works, and popular selections during this hour-long concert. The concert will open with two famous circus marches, “The Billboard” by John Klohr, and “The Southerner” by Russell Alexander. Two Karl King marches are also included on the program, “The Attorney General” and the closing march, “The Missouri Bandman.”

Sunday’s classical selections will include an overture, “The Barber of Seville,” composed in 1818 by Italian composer Gioacchino Rossini. This overture to the opera is still considered one of the greatest works ever written even after more that 200 years. Also on the program will be French composer Georges Bizet’s “Farandole,” the 4th movement from his L’Arlesienne Suite No. 2. “Both of these selections will be familiar to the listener, although you may not recognize them by their titles,” says Jimmerson.

On the lighter side will be a medley of songs depicting life in New York City during the Jazz Age of the 1920’s, titled “New York, 1927,” along with “Fantasia on Lady of Spain,” another well-known musical favorite. Karl King’s lovely serenade, “A Night in June” will be played, and the members of the clarinet section will be featured on “Clarinet Cake” as well.

A special guest will be Andrew Glover, a nationally prominent composer, conductor, and arranger. He joined the staff of the C.L. Barnhouse Company in Oskaloosa in 1998, as executive vice president in charge of music production. He now serves as staff composer-arranger and editor, and is the president of that company.

Originally a native of the St. Louis area, Glover was educated in the public schools of Webster Groves, Missouri. He received his bachelor of music education degree from Central Methodist University, did graduate work at Southeast Missouri State University and taught in the St. Louis area for several years. His performance experience includes playing with the Detroit Municipal Band under the direction of Leonard Smith.

Glover’s band compositions and arrangements now number well over 200, most of which are published by the C.L. Barnhouse Co., and have been performed, recorded, and broadcast by bands worldwide. He will conduct his new arrangement of Josef Strauss’ polka, “Happy Go Lucky,” along with a recently discovered unpublished manuscript of an aerial waltz written in the 1940s by Karl King titled “Rippling Waves.”

“There will be something for all musical tastes during this hour of great band music,” promises conductor Jimmerson. In case of inclement weather, the concert may be cancelled at the starting time. Any announcements will be made on the band’s Facebook page listing for the band at https://www.facebook.com/karlkingband/ or on the band’s website at www.karlking.us.

Starting at $4.94/week.
