The final concert of this 2022 summer season by the Karl L. King Municipal Band of Fort Dodge will be held at 7:30 p.m. Sunday at the Karl L. King Band Shell in beautiful Oleson Park. Admission is free, courtesy of the City of Fort Dodge. Conductor of the band is Jerrold P. Jimmerson, with Dan Cassady as the assistant conductor and Paul Bloomquist is the announcer.

Persons are reminded to bring their own lawn chairs or blankets, since there is no seating provided. The Good Shepherd Lutheran Church from Fort Dodge will again be selling homemade ice cream and cake before and during the concert, starting around 6:30 p.m.

The Karl L. King Municipal Band will feature a variety of marches, classical works, and popular selections during this hour-long concert. The “Grand Finale Concert” will open with Karl King’s most famous and often recorded march, “Barnum and Bailey’s Favorite,” followed by former conductor Reginald R. Schive’s tribute to the local newspaper, “The Fort Dodge Messenger.”

Sunday’s classical selection will be an overture published in 1924 by Karl King, “Fountain of Youth.” On the lighter side will be a medley of songs from the popular song-writing team of Burt Bacharach and Hal David, including such hits as “What The World Needs Now is Love,” “I Say a Little Prayer” and “Do You Know the Way to San Jose?” Meredith Willson’s touching 1950s ballad, “May the Good Lord Bless and Keep You” is also on the program, along with a Spanish paso doble titled “El Relicario.”

Guest soloist will be Jared Knapp, a graduate of Humboldt High School and a recent graduate from Wartburg College in Waverly. Knapp will perform “Variations on Barnacle Bill, the Sailor” on the bass trombone. Knapp will be teaching in the Middle School at Sumner-Fredericksburg Community Schools this fall.

Special guest conductor will be Andrew Glover, a nationally prominent composer, conductor, and arranger. He joined the staff of the C.L. Barnhouse Company in Oskaloosa in 1998, as executive vice president in charge of music production. He also serves as staff composer-arranger and editor, and is now the president of that company.

A native of the St. Louis area, he was educated in the public schools of Webster Groves, Missouri. He received his bachelor of music education degree from Central Methodist University, and did graduate work at Southeast Missouri State University. His band works now number well over 200, most of which are published by the C.L. Barnhouse Co., and have been performed, recorded, and broadcast by bands worldwide.

Mr. Glover will conduct his new arrangement of one of Karl King’s 1921 marches, “The Soaring Eagle,” along with a recently discovered unpublished manuscript of King’s titled “Venus Waltz” and Glover’s arrangement of “Nimrod (from ‘Enigma Variations’),” by Edward Elgar.

This final summer concert closes with one of Karl King’s famous circus galops, “The Big Cage,” followed in the traditional circus way with the playing of King’s march, “Auld Lang Syne,” and then closing with our national anthem, “The Star-Spangled Banner.” The band will resume their regular series of three winter concerts again beginning next February.
