Karl L. King Municipal Band summer concerts kick off Sunday

The Karl L. King Municipal Band of Fort Dodge will open its 2022 summer concert season on Sunday at the Karl L. King Band Shell in Oleson Park. Concert time is 7:30 p.m. and will be preceded by an ice cream social, served by the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, starting around 6:30 p.m.

These concerts are free to all, and are provided as a public service by the City of Fort Dodge. Directing the band again this season will be Jerrold P. Jimmerson, with Dan Cassady serving as the assistant conductor and Paul Bloomquist as the band’s announcer.

This year marks the beginning of the 20th season as conductor for Jerrold Jimmerson. He has planned a varied program of selections from his first season in 2003 as director. Marches scheduled to be performed include “Robinson’s Grand Entree” and “Hawkeye Glory” written by the band’s namesake, Karl L. King. Also on the program is former conductor W.B. Green’s fine march “Trumpets Up” and “Brooke’s Chicago Marine Band” by King’s teacher and mentor, Roland F. Seitz.

Other Karl King compositions on the program include one of his beautiful circus aerial waltzes, “Glory of Egypt,” a ragtime novelty titled “Ragged Rozey,” along with the fast-paced circus galop, “Sunshine.” A classical offering for the evening will be the beautiful tone poem by Jean Sibelius titled “Finlandia.”

Rounding out the program will be a musical medley of Duke Ellington songs titled “Rhythmoods,” including “Mood Indigo” and a musical montage of Cole Porter classics, including “Anything Goes,” “Begin the Beguine,” “Night and Day” and more.

On the lighter side will be a novelty featuring the members of the clarinet section performing the “Clarinet Polka.” Each concert always closes in the traditional way, with the playing of our National Anthem, “The Star-Spangled Banner.”

In the event of inclement weather, the concert may be cancelled at the starting time.

Plan now to spend each Sunday evening from June 5 through July 24 with the Karl L. King Band in beautiful Oleson Park, located in the southern part of the city of Fort Dodge.

Next week’s concert on June 12 will be the band’s annual Flag Day tribute.
