King Band Irish concert Sunday

The second in a series of three indoor concerts by the Karl L. King Municipal Band of Fort Dodge will be held at 3:30 p.m. Sunday in the Fort Dodge Middle School Auditorium, 800 N. 32nd St. There is no admission charge, with these concerts being provided free of charge to everyone by the City of Fort Dodge. Conductor of the band is Jerrold P. Jimmerson, with Dan Cassady as the assistant conductor and Paul Bloomquist serving as announcer.

This concert is the band’s traditional Irish Concert in celebration of St. Patrick’s Day. Many familiar Irish tunes will be performed, including everyone’s favorite, “MacNamara’s Band” as arranged by former conductor Reginald R. Schive.

The concert opens with an exciting march, “The Boys of Wexford,” followed by “The Irish Brigade” by John W. Casto, and ends with “March on an Irish Air” composed by Claude T. Smith. Also included on this program will be Karl L. King’s fine march, “McKinley’s Own,” dedicated to the former conductor of the Grand Army Band in Canton, Ohio.

Other Irish selections on the program include “Ireland,” a medley of traditional songs arranged by Warren Barker, and the lovely “An Irish Suite for Band,” along with Leroy Anderson’s delightful “The Rakes of Mallow” from his Irish Suite.

Two special guest performances will be featured during this hour-long concert. First will be flautist Dr. David Klee, performing Anne McGinty’s contemporary work, “Variations and Theme.” Dr. Klee recently retired in May of 2021 from Buena Vista University as distinguished professor of music after serving there for 20 years. He was also the principal flautist for the Fort Dodge Area Symphony and the Karl L. King Municipal Band for many years. Dr. Klee received his doctor of musical arts degree in flute performance from the University of Georgia in 1998.

Dr. Klee and his wife Judi now live in Columbus, Nebraska, to be closer to their two sons and two granddaughters. He currently teaches part-time at Central Community College (concert band) and works on his YouTube channel.

Also on the program will be the Triton Kids, founded in 2018 by Will Lopes as a channel of connection between Iowa Central Community College and the community. Now in its third season, Triton Kids is partnering with the Fort Dodge Fine Arts Association to continue to enrich the lives of young singers in grades second through eighth from Fort Dodge and surrounding communities. Triton Kids believes in inspiring young singers to explore the joy of singing, teamwork, musicianship, self-expression and friendship through an environment that supports all children regardless of their cultural, ethnical, and economical background.

The Triton Kids will perform three selections with the King Band. First will be “A Patriotic Salute,” featuring the music of Irish-American composer George M. Cohan. Included in this medley will be “The Yankee Doodle Boy” and “You’re A Grand Old Flag.” Their second selection will be the well-known Irish favorite, “Danny Boy,” followed by “When Irish Eyes Are Smiling,” both arranged by Reginald R. Schive.

This concert will close with the national anthem, “The Star-Spangled Banner.” In case of inclement weather, the concert may be cancelled. Any announcement will be made on the band’s Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/karlkingband/, or on the band’s website at www.karlking.us.

The next concert will be at 3:30 p.m. April 3 in the Fort Dodge Middle School Auditorium, 800 N. 32nd St. This will be the band’s annual Scholarship Concert, featuring the music of youth and springtime.
