When you hear the words “Fort Dodge,” what does it make you think of?

When I hear Fort Dodge I think of Home, Safety, Family & Friends.

What is one word you would use to describe yourself?

Confused

Ok, What’s the second word?

Uncommon

When you grew up in Fort Dodge, were you involved in the community artistically?

Growing up … NO. I was consumed by my own self-hate. School was not important to me. I was very unhappy due to my adoption although, I don’t feel that way now. The only artist approach I took growing up was dying my mohawk different colors. But, I really enjoyed looking at art and images.

What made you decide to go into photography?

It started because I loved Nature Images. I wanted to be the guy that sold images for offices and such. I ended up photographing some weddings and fell in love with capturing people. I have a deep love and respect for people so, it became a way for me to express myself as well.

What made you decide to open your own business, Memories in Focus?

I don’t think I’m wired to work a normal schedule or, for someone else … I wanted to make my own path. I was enjoying photographing people so, it just felt like the right step. I started in my home and then opened a retail space.

What do you most enjoy about owning your own business?

So many things! PEOPLE and their Story. That’s my #1. I get to spend time with my family and friends. Also, the time I get to spend with the high school kids. Kids I can help. I understand so many of their issues so it gives me an opportunity to help … AND that would be the last thing … HELPING , I have been able to go on shoe drives across the country, make a coat rack for people downtown and so on.

Do you think being bald makes you a better photographer?

Bald is Beautiful

What’s your favorite color and why?

Purple, and I don’t know why.

If you could trade places with one person for the day, who would it be and why?

My Dad. For that day, I would know what it’s like to be accomplished, fair, loving, in control, steady.

You are stranded on an island, you can only eat one thing for the rest of your life … what do you choose?

Chocolate Chip Cookies

What do you most enjoy about the art and culture scene in Fort Dodge?

I love that the city offers unintentional art for my business. Colors, Doorways, architecture and everything the Blanden has to offer our town.

Finish this sentence……..

“200 years ago, there was this dude, Troy Schroeder … he is best known for … willing to help anyone if they asked.
