Choral Society, Jive for Five to perform

Fort Dodge Choral Society and Jive for Five! brass quintet will share the joy of Christmas music at 3 p.m. on Dec. 15 at First United Methodist Church, 127 N. 10th St. The concert, entitled “Silent Night,” is preceded by a 2 p.m. reception and the opportunity for audience members to join in singing beloved carols at 2:30 pm.

Sparkling arrangements of traditional carols, ranging from “Silent Night” to “Sing We Now of Christmas,” will create a festive celebration. Daniel Pinkham’s powerful “Christmas Cantata” and settings for choir, organ, brass and audience evoke Christmas’ power to unify a community.

Conductor Bruce Perry said, “During a season when hustle and bustle often become overwhelming, it is wonderful to hear beautiful music. Music’s power was never better demonstrated than during the 1914 World War I Christmas ceasefire when troops from both sides left the trenches and united their voices, singing ‘Silent Night’ in many languages. Choral Society’s concert is a testament to the great role music plays in our lives and its power to evoke emotion.”

Jive for Five! and Fort Dodge Choral Society have enjoyed frequent collaborations, including Memley’s “Gloria and Magnificat,” John Carter’s “The Crown of Peace,” and Christmas works ranging from Gabrielli to Ben Allaway. The scope of the quintet’s repertoire is a great testament to the group’s technical and musical skill. Jive for Five! is in great demand throughout the area.

Fort Dodge Choral Society unites singers from Webster County nd surrounding counties to bring great music to life. This season marks the group’s 52nd year of sharing the gift of music with the community.

Admission is available at the church. Tickets are $10, with all students admitted free. For more information, visit FDChoralSociety.org.
