Play highlights women’s experiences

Fort Women’s Weekend will showcase ‘Vagina Monologues’

The Fort Museum and Frontier Village will hold its first Women’s Weekend on Saturday.

It will begin at 6 p.m. with a cocktail party featuring a cash bar and appetizers.

Then at 7 p.m. Stage Door Productions will perform ”The Vagina Monologues,” written by Eve Ensler.

Tickets can be purchased in advance for $12 by calling the Fort Museum and Frontier Village at 573-4231. Tickets will be available at the door for $15.

“We wanted to create a women’s event that was fun and entertaining, but also with a strong purpose, and we thought this would be the perfect way to showcase and support the women of Fort Dodge,” said Cheryl Sherry, executive director of the Fort Museum and Frontier Village.

“Stage Door Productions is a big part of this event,” she added. “I am acting as the producer. Shelly Bottorff and Niki Conrad are the directors for “The Vagina Monologues.”

The cast members are Susan Ahlers Leman, Nicole Maffin Tracey, Alyssa Sparks, Amy Porter, MaryJo Laupp and Joan Meyer.

“The Vagina Monologues” is a play comprised of personal monologues read by women. It delves into consensual and nonconsensual sexual experiences, body image, direct and indirect encounters with reproduction, sex work and other topics through the eyes of women of various ages, races and sexuality.

In 1998, Ensler and others launched V-Day, a global nonprofit movement that has raised more than $100 million for groups working to end violence against women and girls through benefits of “The Vagina Monologues.”

Stage Door Productions, which is currently beginning its sixth season, provides musical theater training and experiences for youth from grades K-12, including a summer musical, two cabarets and a small cast adult winter production, along with a variety of educational opportunities for youth and adults each year.

After the performance, there will be a complimentary dessert buffet and cash bar with specialty drinks available for purchase.

Because of the content of the show, only people aged 18 and over will be admitted.
