The event featured a display of King's career and the 50 years he spent in Fort Dodge.

The second in the series of indoor concerts by the Karl L. King Municipal Band will be held on Sunday afternoon, March 12.

The show will begin at 3:30 p.m., in Decker Auditorium at Iowa Central Community College and is the band’s traditional Irish concert in celebration of St. Patrick’s Day.

Admission is free.

Many familiar Irish tunes will be performed, including “McNamara’s Band,” as arranged by former conductor Reginald R. Schive.

Irish selections on the program include “An Irish Rhapsody” by Clare Grundman, Melanie Donahue’s musical portrait of Ireland, “Eire” and “Mother Machree,” a chorale setting by John Zdechlik.

There will also be march selections at the program including “Spirit of Minstrelsy,” composed by the band’s namesake, Karl L. King, along with “The Boys of Wexford” and “Garry Owen.”

Special guest soloist will be Dan Cassady, a regular member of the Karl L. King Municipal Band and a frequent trombone soloist. Cassady will perform the traditional Irish favorite, “Londonderry Air.”

Cassady is a retired music educator who taught music and directed band programs at Fort Dodge Senior High School, Iowa Central Community College, and St. Edmond High School. He currently performs as a trombonist with Jive For Five.

The assistant conductor of the band, David Klee, will direct “A Longford Legend,” by Robert Sheldon. This three-movement collection of Irish street ballads includes “A Longford Legend,” “Young Molly Bawn,” and “Killyburn Brae.”

Also featured on this concert will be a newly-formed group in Fort Dodge, Bad to the Bone. This trombone quartet will be featured on “Escapade from Trombones.” Group members include Cassady from Twin Lakes, Paul Hochmuth from Knierim, Megan Cassady from Fort Dodge, and Paul Bloomquist from Dayton.

Roger Netx, from Manson, a long-time member of the saxophone section in the band, will lead the audience in a sing-along of two traditional Irish favorites, “When Irish Eyes Are Smiling,” and Bing Crosby’s popular hit, “That’s an Irish Lullaby.”

Jerrold P. Jimmerson is the conductor of the band.

In case of inclement weather, the concert will be cancelled.
