Calhoun County Museum to hold free dance on Oct. 25

ROCKWELL CITY — The Calhoun County Historical Society will hold a dance/concert from 6:30 to 9 p.m. on Oct. 25 at the Calhoun County Museum in Rockwell City. The Al Welsh Orchestra, one of the longest running successful dance bands in the Midwest, will perform varieties of dance music from the turn of the 20th century up through the 1960s and beyond in big band style.

This year will mark the 19th annual dance at the museum. The evening is open to the public with an opportunity for dancing, listening and conversation with friends, along with goodies provided, including pop, bars and Johnson’s Famous Popcorn. Admission is free, but freewill donations for the museum will be accepted.

The popular Al Welsh Orchestra has been in existence over the last 65 + years and features ballroom style music including fox trots, waltzes, polkas, cha chas, tangos, rhumbas and sambas in a library of over 700 songs. Local Rockwell City resident and musician Denny Anderson plays trombone and is a long-time member of the Al Welsh Orchestra.

The Calhoun County Museum, with its recent new addition, along with a partial remodeling, houses a vast amount of artifacts filling the entire building. It has been located at 150 High St. in Rockwell City for about 40 years. The museum “ballroom” works out perfectly for the annual dance, since the building, being the former middle school, utilizes what used to be the school gymnasium, with plenty of tables and seating, both stadium style and on the floor with the band on stage.

Over the past 18 years, the museum board has found this event to be very successful, and is their way of saying “thank you” to all Calhoun County and neighboring county residents who have supported the museum in a number of ways over the years.

Starting at $4.62/week.
