Visiting artist to share snow-dyed pieces

SAC CITY – Receptions will be held to meet a visiting artist working in fabrics on Jan. 29 at the Sac City Public Library.

Mavis Simms will be at the library at 10:30 a.m. and again at 6:30 p.m. to discuss her art, answer questions and demonstrate the technique of snow-dying.

A native of northern Minnesota, Simms began creating quilts and wall art approximately 40 years ago, but it was only in 2010 she began to experiment with several different processes of hand dying fabric.

Snow dyeing was one of these techniques and she said she has been thrilled with its unpredictable and eye-catching results. No two pieces are ever the same. She then uses the unique fabric pieces to create one of a kind and diverse wall art.

Simms predominately works with cotton, silk and linen, although she has also repurposed vintage pieces, embellishing them with beading.
