To the editor: I finally read a letter to you that needs backup. I was very impressed with Justin Hoover. I see another money pit — Fort Dodge’s high school. The main problem is the flat roof (over) the Little Theatre and a few other parts of roof have been slanted. What did new middle school cost — $32 million? Why not build a new high school south of new middle school for $50 or $60 million and have a new high school? Could use some of junior high facilities like theater and parking. Since it opened more than 50 years ago, Iowa Central Community College has had students who excel in the classrooms, labs and shops and also in the venues of athletic competition. It has also produced graduates who went on to distinguished careers in public service, business, health care and just about every other field of human endeavor. The school has a Hall of Fame to honor its outstanding students, faculty, staff members, and alumni. Each year, a select few are inducted. This year’s induction ceremony will be held tonight. To the editor: I have seen a great deal of support in The Messenger for the upcoming Iowa Central and Fort Dodge School bond issue referendums. The main supporting point made in both these questions is passage will result in “no increase in the property tax rate.” While this might be true, everyone should note that these two taxing authorities are asking taxpayers to borrow a combined $77 million and pay it back with interest. This is simply a continuation of the current levy that has already proven its value to students, families, and taxpayers alike. To the editor: I read that some candidates for City Council are in agreement on tearing down deteriorating buildings, including the Warden Plaza. Decades ago, the City Council and city officials concentrated their attention on big box stores and the mall, turning their backs on downtown Fort Dodge. Now Sears, Penneys, and Younkers are gone, along with the mall. The main streets in Algona, Humboldt, Webster City, Boone and Storm Lake are bustling downtown business districts.
