A large building at a local metal recycling facility was destroyed by an early morning fire Friday.
No one was injured in the blaze at D & L Metal Recycling LLC, 2120 S. 11th St. However, the building and everything in it was destroyed.
The company posted a notice on its Facebook page stating it would be closed until Monday because of the fire.
The blaze was reported at 2:15 a.m. Firefighters were on the scene for about four hours, battling flames as well as high winds, cold temperatures and ice.
First arriving firefighters found flames on the ground floor of the building that were spreading into a large open attic space, according to Fire Chief Steve Hergenreter.
Firefighters went to work with three hoselines. Soon, they were forced out of the building by the large volume of flames, exploding propane and acetylene tanks and a roof that appeared to be about to cave in.
Then firefighters worked to prevent the blaze from spreading out of that building. The department's aerial ladder was set up to direct a big stream of water into the fire from above.
Off-duty firefighters were called in to assist at the scene and to be ready to respond to any other emergencies that might happen in the city.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
Webster County sheriff's deputies responded to the scene along with firefighters.
