Anyone with unused prescription medication sitting in their medicine cabinets has the opportunity to dispose of it today during the twice-a-year Drug Take Back event.
Held in the spring and fall, these events, which are a collaborative effort between the Webster County Sheriff's Department and federal Drug Enforcement Administration, provide the chance for people with unused medicines to anonymously drop them off so they can be disposed of properly.
There are three drop-off sites.
Medicines can be dropped off from 10 a.m. to noon today at Daniel Pharmacy, 1114 Central Ave.
This is the 17th Take Back event over the past nine years, according to Webster County Sheriff Jim Stubbs.
Pills and patches are accepted at the drop-off sites.
According to Stubbs, about 460 tons of prescription drugs were turned in across the nation.
And over the past 16 Take Back events across the country, the DEA said nearly 11 million pounds of unused drugs have been discarded..
Stubbs said the reason Take Back events are important is because unused pills are subject to misuse and abuse. Additionally, throwing unused medicine in the trash or flushing it down the toilet is discouraged as it may cause health and safety concerns.
