Fatal accident reported on Kenyon Road Bridge

A fatal accident has been reported on the Kenyon Road Bridge in Fort Dodge.

Fort Dodge Police Department Capt. Ryan Gruenberg has confirmed that one person is dead and two people are injured.

Kenyon Road is closed until further notice and travelers are advised to avoid the area.

UPDATE:

A head-on crash involving a car and pickup truck on Kenyon Road Bridge left one woman dead and two others injured Thursday afternoon, according to Sgt. Aaron Smidt, of the Iowa State Patrol.

The crash was reported at about 1:38 p.m. on the bridge between South Eighth Street and Avenue C.

According to Smidt, the driver of a Chevrolet Impala was driving southwest on the bridge, towards UnityPoint Health ­ Trinity Regional Medical Center, when it crossed the concrete center divider and struck a Dodge Dakota pickup truck head-on.

The truck was traveling northeast in the other lane of travel, Smidt said.

The impact of the crash sent the car into the east shoulder, with the front end facing west.

The pickup truck came to rest on its side. It was partially on the concrete divider.

One woman was declared dead on scene, according to Smidt.

She was a passenger in the car.

Firefighters had to use extrication tools to help the driver of the truck out of the vehicle. That driver was transported to Trinity Regional Medical Center and is in stable condition.

The driver of the car was transported to Trinity Regional Medical Center before being airlifted to a hospital in Des Moines.

The names of those involved were not released, pending notification of family.

Kenyon Road Bridge was closed for about two hours, while emergency personnel worked on scene.

Traffic on both sides of the bridge were rerouted.

“We would like to extend our appreciation to the public for their patience during this closure allowing emergency crews to safely handle the incident,” Capt. Ryan Gruenberg, of the Fort Dodge Police Department said.

The Iowa State Patrol continued its investigation Thursday afternoon.

The Fort Dodge Police Department, Fort Dodge Fire Department, Webster County Sheriff’s Department, Iowa State Patrol, Fort Dodge Public Works Department, Webster County emergency management, and a Webster County medical examiner investigator were on scene.
