GREEN RIVER, WYOMING -- Two people, including a child who attended Fort Dodge community schools, passed away after a two-vehicle collision on icy Interstate 80 in Wyoming over the weekend.
Angelena Hiracheta, 6, of Moorland, and Shelly Dale Leon, of Chico, California, died as a result of the crash, which was reported at about 8:05 a.m. Saturday, according to Sgt. Jeremy Beck, of the Wyoming Highway Patrol.
Hiracheta was a student in the Fort Dodge Community School District.
Hiracheta and Leon were among six occupants traveling in a Honda Odyssey van.
The van was driven by Ashley Hiracheta, 28, of Moorland. She was driving eastbound on Interstate 80, west of Green River in Sweetwater County, according to Highway Patrol reports.
Also traveling eastbound was a 2010 Peterbilt semi tractor-trailer driven by Helal Ghulam Majid, 27, of Lathrop, California.
According to Beck, the driver of the van lost control on the ice and snow covered roadway and the semi hit the back of the van.
The van came to rest on the south side of the roadway. The semi continued a short distance before stopping in the median, the Highway Patrol reported.
Leon was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash. She passed away at Memorial Hospital of Sweetwater County.
Angelena Hiracheta was not in a child restraint and was declared dead at the scene, according to the reports.
Another child passenger in the van suffered injuries and was airlifted by helicopter to the University of Utah Hospital. That child's condition was not known Monday night.
Ashley Hiracheta was transported to Memorial Hospital of Sweetwater County for injuries suffered in the crash. She was reportedly wearing a seatbelt.
Majid was uninjured in the crash.
The Wyoming Highway Patrol is investigating the speeds of both drivers as factors in the crash.
