Coyle on list of credibly accused priests

Diocese releases document naming accused perpetrators

A former priest who was living in the Marian Home in Fort Dodge late last year is among the clergymen on a list of those considered to be credibly accused of sexual abuse that was released recently by the Diocese of Sioux City.

Jerome P. Coyle now lives in a specialized care facility in Missouri, according to information provided by the diocese. He served a Pocahontas County parish in the early 1970s.

Also on the list is the late Rev. Louis H. Greving, who was the director of the Grotto of the Redemption in West Bend from 1956 to 1987.

The list contains the names of 27 priests or former priests, 24 of whom served in Fort Dodge or surrounding communities.

Several of them are now dead. In many cases, they served in the Fort Dodge area for just a few years of their career.

The incidents of which they are considered credibly accused date back as far as the 1950s.

Coyle was living in the Marian Home, 2400 Sixth Ave. N. in the fall of 2018. That care facility is across the street from the St. Edmond Catholic Schools campus.

He is the subject of 13 allegations, all of which involved boys, according to the diocese. In 1986, he was told by church leaders that he could no longer function as a priest.

Coyle had been living in New Mexico. He moved into the Marian Home after suffering injuries in a vehicle accident in New Mexico.

Bishop R. Walker Nickless said last year that Coyle would not be staying in the Marian Home permanently.

Coyle had served as pastor of St. Margaret Parish in Rolfe from 1970 to 1972.
