Plane crashes in cornfield near Bode

Pilot from Hardy escapes uninjured Saturday afternoon

HUMBOLDT — A Hardy man escaped without injuries after crashing a single engine aircraft in a cornfield in Humboldt County Saturday afternoon, according to Humboldt County Sheriff Dean Kruger.

Jerome Kohlhaas, 65, crashed the plane in an area near 2041 102nd St., northeast of Bode, Kruger reported.

Prior to the Humboldt County crash, an emergency aircraft landing was reported to officials at 2:15 p.m. in a bean field near St. Joseph in Kossuth County, the Kossuth County sheriff’s office reported.

The landing was made because of engine trouble, according to Kruger.

After the plane was inspected by a mechanic, Kohlhaas attempted to fly the plane.

At that point, the plane crashed.

It was not reported how long the plane was in the air or how far the plane traveled before crashing.

The single engine 1937 Stinson Gallwing has an estimated $50,000 in damages.

The Humboldt County Sheriff’s Department and Kossuth County Sheriff’s Department were on scene.

The crash is being investigated by the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board.
