Husske promoted to FD assistant police chief

He will begin his new role with department on July 3

A Fort Dodge police lieutenant was approved as the city's next assistant police chief Monday evening.

Cory Husske will take over that position on July 3.

He will replace Acting Assistant Police Chief Roger Porter, who will become the police chief on that date.

''Future Chief Porter and I are on the same page as far as the future of our Police Department is concerned,'' Husske told the City Council Monday evening.

The council voted unanimously to appoint Husske.

The new assistant police chief's starting salary will be $78,023.52.

The promotions of Porter and Husske were triggered by the upcoming retirement of Acting Police Chief Kevin Doty, who will leave the department at the end of this year after about 24 years of service.

Husske is a Fort Dodge native.

His first day on the job as a Fort Dodge police officer was Aug. 10, 2004. He was a patrol officer until October 2009.

In that month, he moved to the department's Criminal Investigations Division. While serving in that division, he worked extensively on cyber crimes. Husske became a certified forensic computer examiner through the International Association of Computer Investigative Specialists.

''There's not a lot of them in the country,'' Doty said.

Husske developed the division's policies and procedures for investigating cyber crimes.

In April 2014, he was promoted to sergeant and returned to street patrol.

In October 2014, Husske was promoted to lieutenant, marking a rare occasion when a Fort Dodge police officer was promoted twice in one year. He was placed in command of the Criminal Investigations Division at that time.

Husske has completed the FBI's Leadership Trilogy training. He is now working on an associate degree in criminal justice.

''I know we're going to see great things from him,'' Doty said of Husske.
