Daniel ties school record
MASON CITY — Noah Daniel embraced the moment here on Thursday, tying Fort Dodge’s school record in the 100-meter dash with a time of 10.72 in a Class 4A co-ed state track and field qualifying meet.
The Dodger junior, who qualified for state a year ago in both the 100 and 200, unofficially did the same this time around on a breezy night against a stellar lineup of competitors. The entire 2025 field at Drake Stadium in Des Moines will be released on Friday.
Daniel’s mark met the standard set by Cray Washington, who had the same mark as a junior at the Dodger Relays in 2014. Washington won the state championship in the event the next season.
“Noah did an outstanding job with the pressure on,” FDSH head coach Nik Moser said. “A 10.72 is a 10.72. That’s a great time in a very fast field. We knew (his opponents Thursday) would be about the best top to bottom of any (4A qualifying meet) in the state.
“He’s getting out of the blocks well. His first 50 meters especially in both races were strong.”
Daniel placed sixth in the 100 and third in the 200 (22.01).
“I feel like I ran well,” Daniel said. “I’m starting to get the hang of it again after missing quite a few meets and having others get cancelled.
“I was obviously happy about (equalling Washington’s time) in the 100. He’s a champion (the program’s last). I’m just excited for state now.”
Fort Dodge’s sprint medley relay quartet of Daniel, sophomore Sam Moser, sophomore Jayce Point and sophomore Cael Hansen took fifth in 3:48.59 despite Moser suffering a hamstring injury during the race.
Senior Hunter Richardson was seventh in the 110-meter hurdles (16.42), with sophomore Mason Bolton (16.44) right behind.
The Fort Dodge girls were close in a number of events, but unofficially, didn’t quite clear the hurdle to push any events through.
Junior Ava Wessels crossed the tape fifth in the 100-meter dash (12.98). Sophomore Ky’Mariana Mosley was fifth in the shot put (33-8.5) and discus (102-11).
The shuttle hurdle relay team of junior LJ Maehl, junior Maeleena Meyer, freshman Charlotte DeJong and freshman Adyson Friesth also took fifth in 1:13.69.
“Ava PR’ed and ran well, and Ky-Ky made the finals in the discus,” FDSH girls coach Todd Constable said. “They did a great job. We knew the shuttle hurdle relay team needed to be in the 1:12 range (for the cutoff). They had a good shot to make it.
“The silver lining is we have all of these kids back next year. They’re a little frustrated now, but that’s a positive to see their competitiveness come through. It will push them to get better, and they will. It’s a great group.”
The Dodgers faced traditional powers Cedar Falls, Norwalk, Ames and Indianola on Thursday, along with Waterloo West, Waterloo East and the host Riverhawks.
