BONDURANT — Bobby Thompson knows it’s early and there is plenty of time to work out the kinks the seventh-ranked Fort Dodge team showed on Thursday night.
The Dodgers (0-1 overall) lost 47-25 to Bondurant-Farrar in their season opener.
Fort Dodge’s lineup is packed with seven underclassmen and has some work to do as the Dodgers progress.
“We have a long way to go,” said Thompson, who has 291 career dual victories. “For the most part we need to get tougher and wrestle the Dodger way. I know we are young and that comes with maturity, but we have to scrap for six minutes and not give up bonus points.
“We were out-fought in a lot of situations.”
The Dodgers came away with five victories on the night, all by bonus points.
Freshman Damien Yeoman, competing in his first high school varsity match, earned a 19-2 tech fall victory over Spencer Dare in 5:17.
“Damien stands out (tonight),” Thompson said. “He wrestled with a high pace, aggressive and got into good positions in his very first match.”
Top-ranked (IAwrestle) and defending state champion Koy Davidson (144) had a 22-6 tech fall over Landon Cory.
Returning state qualifier, seventh-ranked Trace Rial (106) picked up a fall for the Dodgers in 1:25, pinning Evan Fellers of the Bluejays. Fellers is the son of Fort Dodge medalist Adam Fellers.
Sophomore Joe Constable (285) earned a quick tech fall over Cooper Moore in 2:53, by the score of 22-4.
“Trace wrestled aggressively,” Thompson said. “He worked hard.
“Joe got a tech fall against a solid kid. He had good leg attacks and was all over the guy.”
Two-time state qualifier, seventh-ranked Jesse Egli (175) picked up a 14-2 major decision over Chase Rial. Rial is the son of Pat Rial, a former Fort Dodge medalist. Rial is the nephew of Fort Dodge two-time state champion Mark Rial.
“Koy wrestled well and showed good technique,” Thompson said. “Jesse won against a solid kid.”
Nolan Fellers (157), the other son of Adam Fellers earned a 15-0 tech fall over Rylee Brown.
Jordan Rial (165), also the son of Pat Rial, pinned Jayce Skow in 2:46.
The Dodgers return to the mat on Friday at the Dan Gable Donnybrook. Action begins at 11:30 a.m.
