Algona’s Weber earns state spot
GILBERT — Algona’s Gavin Weber punched his ticket to the Class 3A state cross country championships here on Wednesday.
Weber, a junior, placed sixth overall at a qualifier with a time of 16:04. Gilbert’s Carson Squiers was the race winner in 15:12, helping the Tigers claim team gold.
Joining Gilbert as team qualifiers were Sioux Center and MOC-Floyd Valley. The Bulldogs took sixth overall with Humboldt finishing 11th.
Ryley Riggert was 27th for Algona, with teammate Breckin Borchardt finishing 34th. Brooks Morgan placed 39th, Isaac Wilson was 59th, Barrett Morgan was 68th and Cohen Thilges was 86th.
Humboldt’s top finisher was Justin Ash, who grabbed 45th in 18:00. Henry Kramer was 48th, Jaden Himrod was 58th, Isaac Fowler was 72nd, Carson Chambers was 80th, Sterling Scranton was 82nd and Joel Thurm was 85th.
For the girls, Brynn Malo led the way, as she placed 20th in 20:38. Aubry Fisher was right behind with a time of 20:41 for 21st. Bella Metli took 55th, Macey Rodgers 59th, Meg Zweibohmer 69th, Elsie Stattelman 76th and Morgan Mann 79th for the Wildcats.
Mara Davis cracked the Top-30 to lead the Bulldog girls, placing 28th in 21:04. Malyn Davis was 52nd, Hayden Kuhlmann 63rd, Olivia Snider 72nd, Sienna Fehr 74th, Kaitlyn Burns 83rd and Laura Stohr 84th.
Humboldt was ninth overall and Algona 12th, as Sioux Center, Gilbert and MOC-Floyd Valley advanced. Annika Larson from Ballard was the race winner in 18:47.
Weber will race next Friday in Fort Dodge at Lakeside Golf Course.
Lynx run in qualifier
WAVERLY — The Webster City cross country team concluded their season here Wednesday evening at a Class 3A state qualifying meet.
The Lynx boys placed ninth overall and the girls were 11th.
Junior Justin Callahan was the top finisher for the WCHS boys, as he clocked a time of 17:28 to place 17:28. Jack Barner went 17:52 to finish 43rd while Gabe Thumma placed 47th in 18:11.
Ivan Lopez was 63rd (19:02), Jackson Olmstead finished 65th (19:19), Kaleb Draeger was 68th (19:31) and Kyzer Zinnel finished 70th (19:36).
For the WCHS girls, sophomore Izzy Grossoehme placed a team-high 42nd in 21:21. Sydney Oswald was 69th (24:35), Lydia VanDeer was 71st (25:30), Heidi Mendoza was 78th (27:48) and Karina Murray was 79th (28:45).
