The 12th-ranked Iowa Central wrestling team put the finishing touches on another ICCAC regular season dual title here Thursday evening.

Behind a 47-6 victory over Ellsworth, the Tritons finished with a 5-1 league mark. They claimed the tiebreaker with their 201 team points scored in conference duals.

“It feels good,” ICCC head coach Luke Moffitt said. “This is a difficult conference, so to come out on top, that’s a positive heading into the postseason.

“We’ve had a pretty good year, but there are plenty of goals remaining left to achieve for us.”

Iowa Central (13-2 overall, 5-1 in league) won the national duals title for the seventh time last month and will be chasing an eighth national tournament crown in March.

Brooks Cowell, a former Fort Dodge Senior High state medalist, picked up a convincing technical fall at 133 pounds to get the Tritons on the board. He had two takedowns and scored a pair of four-point near-falls in his match with Kaden Karns.

“Brooks really wrestled well,” Moffitt said. “He was looking to continue to score points until the very end.”

Caleb Nadig, Justice Hefley, Matt Sarbo and Hugo Harp were all awarded forfeits, with Phil Smith Jr., Coleton McElliott and John Lovett picking up pins. Iowa Central finished with 10 takedowns to four by the Panthers.

Smith and McElliott, returning wrestlers from a year ago, had five takedowns in their matches and scored 24 points before securing the fall.

The Tritons will compete this weekend at the Dave Edmonds Open in Sioux City before turning all their focus to Feb. 12 and the Region XI Tournament in Iowa Falls. Nationals are scheduled for March 3-4 in Council Bluffs.

John Johnson, a member of the Iowa Central Hall of Fame as part of the 1981 team that won the first-ever national title under head coach Dennie Frederichs, served as the official. Johnson, who spent nine years in the air guard in Fort Dodge while in the National Guard, reffed his final match on Thursday.
