Fort Dodge boys can’t slow Waterloo East

WATERLOO — For a quarter, the Fort Dodge boys weren’t just competitive on Friday — they were winning.

Waterloo East took over after the opening period, though, defeating the Dodgers by a final of 75-54 to finish the season sweep.

“We played really well early on, but we just weren’t able to keep it up,” FDSH head coach Willie Williams said. “We can take plenty away from what happened in that first quarter. (East) has a lot of seniors; they’re a tough, physical squad. This was a big night for them, and there was a huge, loud crowd.

“They got us sped up, and we struggled in the middle part of the ballgame.”

Sophomores Cade Westerhoff (12 points) and Drake Warland (10) led the Dodgers. Senior Jameel Montgomery paced the Trojans (10-7 overall) with 20 points. Classmate Kewone Jones added 19 for East, which has won four straight.

Fort Dodge led 15-11 at the end of the first quarter, but had just three second-period points and fell behind by double digits. The Trojans then led by close to 30 points before the Dodgers took the fourth quarter, 24-22.

“Just a lot of little things are still adding up and keeping us from being consistent,” Williams said. “Almost all are mental. We’re getting better overall, but the next step is to put it all together for a whole game — not just in stretches.

“Cade and Drake played well. Carter (Woodruff), too. And Ryan (Daniel) really battled.”

Fort Dodge hosts Urbandale on Monday at 7:45 p.m.
