Dodger girls blitz Hoover

DES MOINES — The beat goes on for the Fort Dodge girls basketball team.

The Dodgers won their fifth game in as many tries on the young season here Tuesday, blistering Des Moines Hoover by a final score of 58-10.

Head coach Scott Messerly’s squad was relentless defensively against the winless Huskies (0-7 overall).

“We used our size and looked inside to establish things (offensively),” Messerly said. “We played pretty well overall on defense, especially in the first half. We were trying to clean some things up and keep our intensity high, but got a little sloppy at times.

“Everyone played significant minutes, which is a plus. Our fast break worked pretty well for the most part, and we didn’t settle very often for a mediocre or bad shot. We worked to get open and a better look.”

Senior post player Paytene Hiveley had 15 points to lead the Dodgers, who were up 37-4 by halftime and didn’t allow a single point in the second quarter. Classmate Lainey Maehl added 12, with freshman LJ Maehl (9), juinor Mackenzie McIlrath (8) and sophomore Meah McCaleb (8) next in line.

Hiveley and Lainey Maehl grabbed six rebounds each for FDSH, which is off to its best start in 21 years. McCaleb dished out three assists, and McIlrath came up with six steals.

“Paytene and Lainey did a nice job of keeping the ball high and going back up with it rather than (putting it on the floor),” Messerly said. “They can both do a lot of damage that way (on the blocks).

“We have two more road games this week, so we wanted to make sure to stay as fresh and balanced as possible. Everyone contributed.”

The Dodgers head to Humboldt on Thursday, before visiting Marshalltown on Friday.
