BUILDING MOMENTUM

The Fort Dodge girls put together one of their more complete efforts of the early season here Tuesday night, remaining unbeaten with a 48-30 victory over Des Moines Lincoln inside the Dodger gym.

Senior Paytene Hiveley had a career-high, scoring 20 points with 18 rebounds, while classmate Lainey Maehl also had a double-double with 10 and 10.

“I felt like that second quarter was about the best we have played all year,” FDSH head coach Scott Messerly said. “We played our game and were able to stay patient on offense while really using our pressure on defense.

“I think we got some easy buckets there off turnovers and that helped us take the game over.”

Leading 10-4 after the first, the Dodgers (3-0 overall) outscored the Railsplitters (0-4) in the second quarter, 19-9. Hiveley had eight points in the frame as all five Fort Dodge starters scored a basket, including a three by freshman LJ Maehl.

Hiveley had nine rebounds and two blocked shots in the opening eight minutes alone, while Mackenzie McIlrath had eight points in the first half.

“Mackenzie did a great job of disrupting their offense,” Messerly said. “And Lainey played another great game. Paytene was just all over the court and LJ continues to play great as a freshman.

“We still have plenty of things to work on, but it’s good to be 3-0. We have to protect our home-court, especially with our upcoming schedule.”

Hiveley also blocked four shots and had two steals, while McIlrath finished with six steals and five rebounds. Meah McCaleb chipped in two points, four rebounds and four steals, as the Dodgers forced 32 Lincoln turnovers.

For the Rails, Janae Wynter had 10 points and 6-foot-2 junior Carlee Julius scored seven with 15 rebounds and two blocks.

“I thought we did a good job of forcing the ball out of (Marissa) Albright’s hands and our bigs did a nice job on Julius,” Messerly said. “Ashlyn (Wills) and Morgan (Bodholdt) both gave us quality minutes off the bench when we were in a little foul trouble there.”

Fort Dodge has now won three straight against Des Moines Lincoln and four of the last six meetings overall.

Next action for the Dodgers will be Friday when they host Waterloo East before embarking on a four-game road trip to conclude the pre-Christmas portion of their schedule.
