Dodger freshman Ross bringing home tandem of titles

RIONEGRO, Colombia — Fort Dodge’s Dreshaun Ross took his wrestling talents to the international stage over the weekend, and will return home with a pair of gold medals to show for it.

The Dodgers’ precocious freshman captured two titles at the U15 Pan-Am Championships, prevailing in both the Greco-Roman and Freestyle divisions at 85 kg (187 pounds).

The 14-year-old Ross took a wrecking ball to both brackets, surrendering only a single point along the way. The 2022 Fargo Nationals champ earned the Greco-Roman crown on Friday, then doubled up with the Freestyle medal on Sunday.

“It feels really good to come to a different country and wrestle different opponents that I wouldn’t see normally,” Ross said. “It’s very exciting, and it also means more when you are representing the United States.

“The level of competition wasn’t as difficult as other tournaments have been, but I feel I performed very well. It definitely boosts my confidence with the high school season right around the corner. It makes me feel I can compete on a higher level.”

Team USA swept championships in each style and collected 31 medals in all — including 26 golds. American teammates Liam Collins of Minnesota (38 kg), Indiana’s Jensen Boyd (41), Henry Aslikyan of California (44), Florida’s Lincoln Sledzianowski (48), Thomas Verrette of Colorado (57), California’s Mikel David Uyemura (68) and Pennsylvania’s Terrell McFarland (75) matched Ross with titles in both styles for the United States.

“I don’t know if I would say this is my most hard-earned accomplishment, but it definitely separates itself from others because I was wrestling in a different country and representing the USA,” added Ross, a five-time Trinity Award winner.

Twenty athletes made the trip for the American squad. The 2022 U15 Pan American Team Trials in Boys Town, Neb. served as the qualifier in August.

Nolan Fellers, the son of former Fort Dodge Senior High and Iowa Hawkeye wrestler Adam Fellers, also qualified but had to miss the event due to an injury suffered during football. Fellers, an incoming freshman at Bondurant-Farrar, will likely be sidelined until after Christmas break.

The 6-foot-2 Ross won both Freestyle and Greco 15U national titles last May in Las Vegas at the USMC United States Open Wrestling Championships.

Ross recently completed his freshman football season at the varsity level for FDSH, where he was a starting linebacker and rush end. He was an honorable mention all-district selection.

Fort Dodge’s first wrestling practice starts on Monday, Nov. 14. Ross will likely compete at 195 pounds for the Dodgers this season.
