Moline sparks MNW win

MANSON — It was a memorable Homecoming here Friday night for the Manson Northwest Webster football team.

After falling behind early, the Cougars went on a run, posting a 42-6 victory over Belmond-Klemme for their first victory of the season.

The Broncos scored on a blocked punt to gain a 6-0 lead before Logan Moline connected with fellow sophomore Matt Condon on two touchdown passes to put MNW ahead for good.

Moline hit Condon from 64 yards out, and the two connected again on a 31-yard TD pass. Moline took it in himself for the third score to make it 20-6 midway through the second quarter.

Kamden Birkey, another 10th-grader, added a 27-yard rushing touchdown late in the first half, scoring again to start the third quarter. Senior Jaydin Anderson got in the end zone with a short run that put the Cougars up 42-6.

The win was the first for new Manson Northwest Webster head coach Zach Noffsinger. The Cougars head to Eagle Grove next Friday night.

No. 1 Humboldt stays unbeaten

BALLARD — Top-ranked (Class 3A) Humboldt got everything they could handle from Ballard here Friday night.

But, behind a pair of fourth quarter touchdowns, the Wildcats were able to remain unbeaten, 26-14.

Will Orness got Humboldt (5-0 overall, 1-0 in district) on the board midway through the first with a 15-yard touchdown run. Trever Beach’s extra-point made it 7-0 in favor of the Wildcats in the district opener.

Orness, though, was picked off in the second quarter by Ballard’s (1-4, 0-1) Gabe Christensen, who returned it for a score to tie the contest. It would remain that way until Lance Coon took the ball 52 yards for a score with just over 10 minutes to go in the third quarter.

The Wildcats would surrender their first offensive score when Luke Hartsock found Jakson Flieschmann from 24 yards out, as the Bombers took the lead, 14-13.

Orness directed a scoring drive that resulted in the game-winning points, finding Beach from eight yards out. Coon secured the win when he broke free on an 80-yard run with just under eight minutes to go.

Coon ran 21 times for 229 and two score, while Orness had 34 and a rushing touchdown. On defense, Tayeton Lohaus had a sack and 2.5 tackles for loss, while Michael Illg had seven tackles.

Southeast Valley falls to Midgets

GOWRIE — Southeast Valley dropped a 7-0 decision to Estherville-Lincoln Central on Friday night.

The Jaguars (2-3 overall, 0-2 in district) had a strong defensive performance, but weren’t able to get on the scoreboard.

Dalton Crouse led the ground game with 57 yards. Carl Berglund had 36 and Brady Hanson rushed for 31.

Justin Loseke led the defense with nine tackles and a sack. Ethan Ackerson had 6.5 tackles.

Golden Bears lose to Harris-LP

ALGONA — Bishop Garrigan lost to Harris-Lake Park 38-14 on Friday night.

Cal Birkey and Caden Roethler both had touchdowns for the Golden Bears (2-3 overall, 1-2 in district).

Birkey had a two-yard run and Roethler had seven-yard score. Birkey finished with 12 carries for 51 yards.

Garrett Heying threw for 119 yards and Aidan Hovey had three catches for 42 yards.

Caleb Hemphill caught three touchdown passes and had a 116 yards receiving.

Tyce Gunderson threw for 187 yards and four touchdowns.
