Trio of area teams state-bound

Humboldt, Garrigan, Newell-Fonda girls advance

Three Messengerland girls golf teams qualified for the upcoming state tournament through regional action on Wednesday.

In Class 3A, Humboldt claimed the Region 1 title with a 387 led by medalist Nora Carlson, who fired a round of 80.

Both Bishop Garrigan and Newell-Fonda advanced in 1A with team crowns. The Golden Bears won the Region 5 title on a tiebreaker over Grundy Center, while the Mustangs were crowned winners of Region 1 on their home course with a 370.

Humboldt’s Noelle Hamand shot a 93 to tie for fifth overall in Denison at Majestic Hills Golf Course. The Wildcats will compete at River Valley Golf Course on May 26-27 in Adel.

Annie Burns had an 83 to finish fourth for Bishop Garrigan in Grundy Center at Town and Country Golf Club.

For Newell-Fonda, Grace Erickson was runner-up with an 89, while Alexis Barber finished third and Nevaeh Lyman fifth.

The Golden Bears and Mustangs will head to Marshalltown and the American Legion Golf Course for state next week.

Pocahontas Area just missed out on advancing in 2A as a team, but Nicole Panbecker fired an 88 to tie for fifth and qualify. She will compete in Cedar Falls at Pleasant Ridge Golf Course for state.

Webster City’s Katie Casady tied for third at a 3A regional and qualified for state. Casady carded a 79 on Wednesday and will compete for the Lynx in the field with the Humboldt girls in Adel.
