AMES — Aaron Lursen put his offseason workouts to the test here Friday at the IATC Indoor Track and Field Championships.

Lursen, a St. Edmond junior, picked up a pair of Top-6 individual finishes in the distance events. He was fifth in the 800 and placed sixth in the 3,200.

St. Edmond finished in a tie for 11th overall in Class 1A, as they recorded several Top-10 placings overall. The event took place from inside the Lied Athletic Recreation Center on the Iowa State campus.

Southeast Valley had a strong showing in 2A, as Kaleb Scott was the high jump runner-up and also placed sixth in the 60. Kolson Kruse was 10th in the long jump for the Jaguars.

Lursen, a state cross country qualifier, claimed the North Central Conference individual cross country title this past fall.

“The races went great,” Lursen said. “Unlike Tuesday (at the Dickinson Relays), I felt this was a great way to launch me into the season. I am very excited to see what the team and I can accomplish.

“Placing where I did felt amazing as that meet the meet is extremely competitive. All I wanted was to push myself and see how fast I could go, so I am happy that I was able to PR and get a medal.”

The 4×400, distance medley and shuttle hurdle relays all took fifth, along with Quinten McCarville placing seventh in the high jump. Isaac Landwehr just missed out qualifying for the 60 hurdles finals, finishing in ninth.

“We had a really good showing,” SEHS head coach Donn Larson said. “We lost a lot of our speed runners from a year ago, but I like what we have coming back and saw a lot of good times for this early in the season.”

Cayne Reed, Johnny Dickerson, Zach Smith and Hayden Mayer ran the 4×400 with Reed, Jonathan Xiao, Landwehr and Mayer the distance medley.

The shuttle hurdle relay was Landwehr, Quinten McCarville, Drew Szalat and Thomas Cosgrove.

“(Friday) was a great morale booster for everyone,” Lursen said. “It really opened our eyes as to what we can accomplish.”

The 4×800 relay of Klay Baker, Adrian Hanrahan, Dane Hanrahan and Zach Loerts finished in 10th. Szalat was 14th in both the 60 hurdles and 3,200, with the 4×100 also placing 14th.

John Nemmers (shot put) and Baker (800) were 18th.

West Bend-Mallard’s Mitch Stevens was eighth in the 3,200. Collin Montag took 10th in the high jump and distance medley relay.
