Area champs crowned at Wood Invitational in Manson

MANSON — South Central Calhoun earned silver at the Doug Wood Invitational on Saturday, crowning four champions.

Woodbury Central (205.5) was the team champ. The eighth-ranked (IAwrestle) Titans finished with 187 points.

Ogden (165) was third, followed by Manson Northwest Webster (136).

St. Edmond (84.5) took eighth.

Eighth-ranked (113) Justin Rohlfing (106), No. 9 (145) Kevin King (160), third-rated Blake McAlister (170) and No. 2 Jayden Soard (285) all earned gold for SCC.

Ethan Egli (126), Cooper Harman (182) and sixth-ranked (195) Brodie Anderson (220) were victorious for the homestanding Cougars.

St. Edmond freshman Sam Myer (132) took second. Junior Ronnie Orres (120) and Emiliano Guillen (152) were third.

Tyler Rossmanith (170) and Grant Webster (182) were both fourth for St. Edmond.

West Bend-Malllard’s Aaron Massner (138) and Ethan Zaugg (195) placed second. East Sac County’s Bradyn Burns (113) was a runner-up.

“I know on paper it maybe doesn’t look like that great of a performance, but these kids picked it up,” said Gael head coach Eugene Carlson. Their whole attitude was different.

“Hopefully this is a breakthrough for them.”

For the Titans, Rohlfing earned two falls, finishing with a pin of Woodbury Central’s Axton Lindgren in the finals.

King posted a 6-4 decision over eighth-ranked (152) Max McGill of Woodbury Central in the finals.

McAlister cruised to the title with a fall in 28 seconds and pin in 1:28 before winning by medical forfeit over Ian Kohnen of Manson Northwest Webster.

Soard had a fall in 2:23 over Zach Erpelding of Alta Aurelia in the championship round.

Zachary Trott (152) was second for SCC.

Egli (126) pinned Keyton Remsburg of South Hamilton for the crown, adding to a fall and decision for the day.

Harman (182) pinned Tyler Kathman of Ogden in 4:39 to claim first. Harman had a fall and a decision in the tournament.

Anderson ended all three of his matches in the first period. The 220-pound title came on a fall in 48 seconds over Adley Peters of South Hamilton. He had a semifinal fall in 57 seconds, and opened with a pin in 1:08 of the quarters.

Wrestling in his first career varsity tournament, th Gaels’ Myer had a strong day. He came up short against Wyatt Sprecher of Ogden (5:57) in the finals.

Myer pinned South Central Calhoun’s Brock Nattress (1:28) and Manson Northwest Webster’s Carter Hoover (53 seconds) in the quarterfinals and semifinals, respectively.

“Sam had a great day,” Carlson said. “We communicated before the season and I helped talk him into going out for wrestling. He has a very natural ability and talent.

“He can be a very good wrestler and he showed it. I’m very proud of him; he worked very hard.”

Orres lost a 5-1 decision to unbeaten Brand Beaver (6-0) of Woodbury Central in the semifinals. He earned the bronze with a tech fall 18-3 victory over South Central Calhoun’s Case Korleski.

“Beaver has a very good shot and it caught Ronnie off-guard,” Carlson said. “But a tough match like this will be good for Ronnie down the road.”

Guillen suffered a 7-4 decision loss to unbeaten Zack Butler (6-0) of Woodbury Central in the quarterfinals. Guillen bounded back with three straight wins, recording a fall and two decisions. He finished with a 5-3 decision over Jon Seeger of Ogden.

“Emiliano has never been in a situation like this,” Carlson said. “In a match like that, a month from now, I think he’ll come out on top.

“He has a natural strength and quickness.”

After losing to McAlister, Rossmanith bounced back with a fall in 3:14 over Ben Massner of West Bend-Mallard. He lost in the third place match to Kyan Schultzen of Woodbury Central in the place match.

Webster lost in the quarterfinals to Harman, but earned a 21-9 major decision over Owen Duns of South Hamilton in the consolation semifinals before losing to Blase Sanford in the third-place match.

The Gaels are back in action on Thursday for Senior Night when they host Humboldt and Clarion-Goldfield/Dows. Action will begin at 6 p.m.
