Southeast Valley eyes district title

Top-ranked Southeast Valley is one win away from locking up its second straight district championship.

The Jaguars (6-0 overall, 3-0 Class 2A, District 2) just need a little help to clinch this Friday.

If second-ranked OA-BCIG (5-1, 2-1) defeats No. 6 Estherville-Lincoln Central (4-2, 2-1), Southeast Valley has already secured a tiebreaker over the Falcons. Head coach Mike Swieter’s squad also has to knock off No. 8 Pocahontas Area (4-2, 1-2).

The Jaguars will finish the regular season next Friday on the road at seventh-rated Spirit Lake (4-2, 1-2).

Southeast Valley had an offensive explosion in a 62-31 victory last week. The Jaguars accumulated 713 yards of total offense.

Senior quarterback Kolson Kruse had a career night passing, completing 15 of 21 attempts for 390 yards and five touchdowns.

Senior Tre Fisher had a huge night, catching eight balls for 219 yards and three TDs. Junior Eli Johnson had five grabs for 153 and a 65-yard score.

Senior Colton Brant had a 12-yard touchdown reception as well.

Kruse was also hard to stop on the ground, rushing for 150 yards on 13 carries and two scores. He had a long of 51 yards.

Classmate Lathe Muench had 15 carries for 114 yards and two scores.

On the season, Kruse has thrown for 1,199 yards and 13 TDs. He is 55-for-92 at 59.8 percent and has zero interceptions.

Kruse has rushed for 677 yards and nine scores, while Lathe Muench has 597 yards and 11 scores.

Brant leads the receivers with five scores, while Johnson and Fisher have four each.

Pocahontas Area dropped a 20-13 contest to second-rated OABCIG last week. The Indians led 13-12 heading into the fourth quarter.

Chase Boysen rushed for 103 yards and a three-yard touchdown. Kobe Rutherford kicked two field goals.

Boysen has 506 yards passing with two TDs. He has rushed for 557 yards and five touchdowns. Ruger Bunda has three scores.

Area programs Webster City, Algona and South Central Calhoun, which are all undefeated in their respective districts, all square off with unbeaten league opponents.

Webster City (4-2, 2-0) at Spencer (5-1, 2-0)

The run-happy Lynx and Tigers will vie for Class 4A, District 1 supremacy this week.

The Lynx have district wins over Fort Dodge (41-14) and LeMars (50-29). Spencer has blanked Denison-Schleswig (43-0) and the Dodgers (28-0),

Cadence Hofmeyer scored three touchdowns against the Dodgers while rushing for 82 yards. Taron Green had 108 yards and a score. The Tigers accumulated 350 yards on the ground.

This year, the Tigers have run for 1,764 yards. Green (399), Hofmeyer (392) and Calvin Tighe (353) lead the attack. Green and Hofmeyer have seven touchdowns each, while Tighe has two. Quarterback Evan Johnson has run for two.

Against Le Mars last Friday, the Lynx ran for 369 yards of their own, led by Ty McKinney’s 171 yards and two scores. Connor Hanson had two TD runs.

McKinney (341 yards) has six touchdowns on the year and has thrown for 389 and three scores.

CJ Hisler (487), Jaxon Cherry (305) and Hanson (301) are the other leading rushers. Cherry leads in end zone trips with six, followed by Hanson (five) and Hisler (three).

No. 10 Algona (5-1, 2-0) at No. 7 Nevada (6-0, 2-0)

Last week in a 27-13 win over Gilbert, Tyler Manske threw for 183 yards and two touchdowns. This year Manske has thrown for 1,281 yards and 16 scores.

The Bulldogs have 1,090 rushing yards. Manske — along with Carlos Gomez (284), Lamon Ulfers (240) and Trevon Smith (205) — are the leading rushers.

Nevada has cruised through the first six games on its slate, and is coming off a 34-13 win at Ballard. In that contest, James Edwards threw for 174 yards and two scores, while running for two TDs as well.

Smith has caught 32 balls for 568 yards and 10 runs to paydirt.

Edwards has been dynamite through the air and on the ground. He has thrown for 773 yards and 10 touchdowns, while rushing for 684 and 13 scores. Cason Stevenson has 594 yards on the ground and 10 trips to the end zone.

South Central Calhoun (5-1, 3-0) at Woodward-Granger (5-1, 3-0)

The Titans are coming off a hard-fought 18-14 victory over South Hamilton. Quarterback Gavin Batta threw a 35-yard touchdown pass to Blake McAlister and had a one-yard score on the ground. McAlister rushed for 105 yards and a 30-yard touchdown scamper.

Batta has 502 yards passing and seven touchdown strikes.

McAlister is the groundhog with 527 yards and seven scores. Kevin King has four touchdowns, while Zach Trott has three TDs of his own.

Woodward-Granger knocked off Belmond-Klemme 45-8 a week ago. Quarterback Carter Moran was 12-for-20 passing for 192 yards and four touchdowns. Brody Nardini caught four balls for two touchdowns and Dane Polich had three catches for two scores.

Moran and Dylan McCaulley both had rushing TDs.

On the season, Moran has thrown for 850 yards and 12 touchdowns, while rushing for eight scores. Dustin Harney has 651 yards rushing and seven trips to paydirt.

Nardini has 317 yards and two scores receiving, while Polich has caught 17 balls for 307 and six trips to the end zone.
