Triton rugby team topples Minnesota

ST. PAUL, Minn. — The third-ranked Iowa Central rugby team bounced back nicely from their first loss here Saturday.

Herbert Evans had two tries and four other Tritons recorded a try in a 40-8 victory over Minnesota.

Evans was also 1-for-1 on conversion kicks as James Kuahiwinui, Tavius Sykora-Matthess, Zavier Ellis and Griffin Studier all added a try each.

“I thought our lineouts were phenomenal,” Iowa Central head coach Brent Nelson said. “They were as good as I’ve seen. Tavius had really great timing and good throws.”

Iowa Central led 14-0 before turning it on late with a flurry.

“I never want to take anything away from a team, but we have some guys hurt, some guys resting and some guys on the bench that have kept us from putting together a full side yet,” Nelson said. “Once we get everybody healthy and everybody situated, this team is going to be really, really good because they are already really good.

“I just can’t wait to be firing on all cylinders. We’ll line up against anybody and give them our best.”

In the B-side match, Chris Stanback was 6-for-6 on kicks and Damion Gaffney was 3-for-4. Fort Dodge Senior High graduates Dalton Summers and Matt Surles-Davis each had a try.

AJ Mitchell recorded a hat trick with high school teammates Wayne Cosper and Robin Campbell each adding a try.

“I was really happy with the B-side,” Nelson said. “It was great for the Fort Dodge kids to get in there and how cool to have three former high school teammates do that — especially with AJ getting a hat trick.”

Iowa Central’s B-side will be in action Thursday night against Northern Illinois and again on Saturday against Des Moines RFC. The A-side will play Nebraska on October 1 and Iowa on October 2 with split squads.
