Many around the state believe Davenport Assumption’s roster is good enough and deep enough to compete in any class.

Following a slow start to the Class 3A title game here Friday afternoon at Rogers Park, the Knights showed why that just might be true.

After spotting Mount Vernon a 5-1 lead after four innings, Davenport Assumption exploded, scoring three times in the fifth and six in the sixth to claim a fourth state title under Ron Ferrill in the past five seasons, 10-5.

Anna Wohlers was 3-for-4 with four RBI and a homer, Lauren Loken sent a ball over the fence and Olivia Wardlow scored three times as the Knights finished the year on a 12-game win streak.

“We were on our heels for a little while,” Ferrill said. “Finally, we got a big hit and several followed.”

Madie Loken, Libby Madden, Isabella Krogman and Katie Anderson each had a hit and scored a run, with Bella Stoffrogen also crossing home plate. Krogman, Madden and Anderson each stole a base.

Leah Maro replaced Bella Nigey, pitching the final five innings and allowing just three hits and one unearned run. She struck out one and did not walk a batter as the Knights won their fourth title in the past five years.

By rallying from four runs down, Davenport Assumption tied the state title game record for largest comeback, matching Muscatine, who overcame a 4-0 deficit vs. North Scott in 2000.

“I knew we would come back,” Wohlers said. “We never gave up.”

Jenna Sprague struck out five for Mount Vernon with Lilly See had a homer and both Nadia Telecky and Lauren Swartzendrube recorded two hits. The Mustangs had won 10 in a row prior to the loss.

Wohlers was named captain of the all-tournament team with Roe, Nigey and Madden joining her from Davenport Assumption. Sprague, Telecky and Addison Gookin were named from Mount Vernon with Clarke’s Tory Henry, Atlantic’s Olivia Engler and Williamsburg’s Carly Campbell and Charlotte Wetjen making the list.
